The Best Thing I Saw on TV This Week (5/12 – 5/19)

What a week this was to be a fan of great TV! Season finales often bring out the most memorable and thought-provoking moments each year, and this year was no exception. This past week gave me so many phenomenal choices for TV’s best of the best that I needed another day to finally make up my mind!

It seemed that each show I love had at least one moment that I’ve watched again and again and could talk about at length to anyone who’ll listen: Emma finally calling Snow and Charming “Mom” and “Dad” on the finale of Once Upon a Time; Brienne and Jaime sharing a heartfelt goodbye that perfectly captured the nuances of their relationship on  Game of Thrones; Castle laying all his cards on the table and proposing to Beckett on Castle‘s season finale; Danny and Mindy’s game-changing glasses-cleaning moment on The Mindy Project; Michael Scott’s return and all of the sob-inducing final talking heads on the series finale of The Office; and Stefon and Seth’s big moment on Saturday Night Live.

Each of these were incredible television moments, but no moment on TV this week made me as happy as the final scene of New Girl‘s season finale.

Yes, I love a good cliffhanger as much as the next girl, and sometimes a season finale needs to end with me reaching for the tissues in order for it to be a great one. But sometimes you just want to go into the summer hiatus with a smile on your face and hope in your heart—and that’s what New Girl gave its fans with that final scene. This scene was a great representation of everything that’s right about New Girl: Its emotions were honest (I think this scene was Zooey Deschanel’s best work yet), it showcased the blinding chemistry between Deschanel and Jake Johnson, and it simply felt real and earned.

Some finales are like a punch to the gut, making you feel like the wind has been knocked out of you. But this finale was like a happy sigh of relief, a warm laugh as genuine as Jess and Nick’s laughter after yet another stunning kiss.

What was the best thing you saw on TV this week? What moments are you looking forward to with the summer TV season right around the corner?

The Best Thing I Saw on TV This Week (5/5 – 5/12)

This past week was the relative calm before the storm of season finales coming my way as a TV viewer. Most of the shows I watch had strong episodes that set up what look to be even stronger season finales.

Once Upon a Time had its best episode in weeks with an emotional hour that made me love Bae/Neal more than ever before and absolutely broke my heart with his tragic separation from his family once again. Game of Thrones continued to effectively build a sense of foreboding and lay the groundwork for the incredible moments coming in the rest of the season. Castle gave us a compelling case and an even more compelling cliffhanger surrounding Beckett’s future at the 12th precinct. New Girl featured some great scenes with Jess’s father and one ridiculously romantic moment on the rooftop. The Mindy Project was absolutely hilarious—from Mindy and Casey in the shower to Mindy accidentally performing a routine on a stripper pole. And Saturday Night Live welcomed back Kristen Wiig with some of my favorite characters she brought to life during her time on the show (Garth and Kat! Target Lady!).

While all of these shows featured some great individual moments, my favorite thing on TV this week came from The Office. The show’s penultimate episode was its most enjoyable and emotional in a long time—mainly because of the scenes between Jim and Pam and Dwight and Angela.

Jim’s way of showing Pam how much she means to him left me a crying mess. From the clips of their best moments set to a fantastically appropriate song (“Open Your Eyes” by Snow Patrol) to John Krasinski’s flawlessly earnest delivery of “You are everything,” this moment was all that a diehard fan of their relationship could have hoped for as the show ends its run. And the callback to the Christmas card was perfect, but what I loved most was that we’ll never know what it said. That’s for Jim and Pam—not for us—and that’s the way it should be.

The huge leap forward for Dwight and Angela was also incredibly emotional. Rainn Wilson gave me a new favorite Dwight scene with his proposal. He doesn’t usually show that kind of emotion or sincerity, so seeing such pure joy and love on his face was a beautiful thing. I never thought Dwight and Angela could make me cry, but I guess I was wrong. I am going to be an absolute wreck on Thursday when I say goodbye to Dunder Mifflin for good.

What was the best thing you saw on TV this week? Do you have any predictions for what’s going to be the best moment next week (in what’s sure to be a week of exceptional moments)?

The Best Thing I Saw on TV This Week (4/28 – 5/5)

Before this week started, I knew it was going to be one of my favorites of the year in terms of TV because all of my favorite shows were airing incredibly important episodes. And I am happy to say that my hopes were actually exceeded on so many levels. This was a week filled with major plot moments, great character development on every show, and huge leaps forward for my favorite TV relationships.

Once Upon a Time brought some of the focus back to Emma and Henry’s relationship, providing us with some adorable scenes as Operation Cobra was resurrected as Operation Praying Mantis. Game of Thrones perfectly brought to life one of my favorite scenes from all of the A Song of Ice and Fire books when Jaime showed Brienne how much he trusts her and respects her by sharing the secret of why he became the Kingslayer. Castle gave us an emotional look at the history of Castle and Beckett’s relationship and took their relationship to a new level by having Beckett finally tell Castle she loves him. And Parks and Recreation ended its season with big changes coming for many of its characters—especially Ron.

While most of these shows had moments that would probably have been my favorite in any other week, my pick for the best of the best comes from New Girl. After sharing hilarious stories about how they each lost their virginities, Schmidt, Winston, and Cece left Nick and Jess alone with their feelings and a whole lot of sexual tension—which was finally released when Nick opened the elevator door, literally swept Jess off her feet, and carried her to his bed. While the lead-up to their first time was epic in and of itself (Nick’s smile! That kiss!), what solidified this moment as one of my favorites of the whole TV season is the aftermath. Their smiles and laughter told us all what we could have easily guessed from their chemistry all season—it was GOOD. Seeing both Nick and Jess so happy together, simply being their silly selves with one another, was enough to make me melt.

What was your favorite thing you saw on TV this week? Any predictions for what we’ll be talking about at this time next week?

The Best Thing I Saw on TV This Week (4/21 – 4/28)

This was a week filled with relatively mediocre episodes for most of the shows I watch. Sadly, New Girl is still on hiatus, but it’s thankfully returning to our screens this week. Once Upon a Time introduced us to a new side of Belle and broke my heart in the process. Castle wasn’t at its best this week, bringing up some serious relationship issues for Castle and Beckett that seemed to spring out of nowhere. And even Parks and Recreation felt a little stagnant, especially for the last episode before a season finale.

I suppose it’s okay that this past week was pretty uneventful for most of my favorite TV shows because Game of Thrones ended last Sunday’s episode with a moment so epic it would have dwarfed anything else I saw on TV this week no matter what else happened. When I read A Storm of Swords, I knew Daenerys freeing the Unsullied was going to make an amazing onscreen moment, and it turned out to be even more powerful than I’d imagined it would be. From the way Emilia Clarke sounded speaking Valyrian to the chills-inducing moment of the Unsullied pounding their spears for their new leader, I found myself wanting to stand up and cheer for this young woman who went from being a pawn in her brother’s plans to the Mother of Dragons and the true queen of Westeros. I haven’t watched anything that triumphant in a long time.

The Best Thing I Saw on TV This Week (4/14 – 4/21)

There were quite a few things to choose from when it came time for me to pick the best things on TV in the past week. Last Sunday’s episode of Game of Thrones ended with a game-changing moment that begins my favorite character arc in the book series. Castle gave us a Bigfoot hunt for the ages. But my favorite moment of the week came from Parks and Recreation, which took its perfect nerd references to new heights this week. Every time this show mentions Game of Thrones, I am overcome with joy. So it goes without saying that Donna’s newfound passion for the show (and its plethora of attractive cast members) was one of the highlights of my week. Retta is always flawless in her delivery, but I don’t know if she’s ever been better than this scene (maybe it’s because Donna sounded exactly like Retta’s Twitter feed). And how wonderful was Ben’s eBay name being TallTyrionLannister? In a week that featured a lot of sad things in the news, it was nice to have something light and fun to turn to—and that’s exactly what Parks and Recreation gave us.

The Best Thing I Saw on TV This Week (4/7 – 4/14)

I’m sorry that this post is a little late…I’ve been spending way too much time traversing Westeros from the pages of A Feast for Crows lately, and I let time get away from me this weekend. (And yes, there will be some A Song of Ice and Fire essays on here as soon as I’m done with A Dance with Dragons—whenever that may be.)

This was a solid, if not outstanding, week in the world of television. There were no instant-classic episodes to be found, but most things (with The Office being the lone exception) made me feel good about where the shows I watch are heading as finale season draws near. New Girl gave us a fun episode that featured some of the best Schmidt material in Season 2. Game of Thrones set the stage well for the chaos that’s to come this season, and it continued to build upon my favorite relationship from the books (Jaime and Brienne).

However, the best thing I saw on television in the last week came from Parks and Recreation. Ron Swanson ate a banana, and it was truly one of the funniest things I’ve seen on TV this year. It takes a great actor to make something so simple on paper so hilarious in execution, and Nick Offerman is truly a great comedic actor.

What was your favorite moment from the last week in the world of television?

The Best Thing I Saw on TV This Week (3/31 – 4/7)

This was a fantastic week for the TV shows I regularly watch. The Mindy Project had two hilarious episodes that highlighted the chemistry between Mindy and Danny better than ever before. Parks and Recreation gave us the wonder that was Ben on morphine and yet another reminder that he and Leslie have the most inspiring marriage on TV. New Girl took the sexual tension between Nick and Jess to new heights and gave us some classic Schmidt/Winston interaction, too. Even Saturday Night Live had some moments in contention for best of the week with the wonderful Melissa McCarthy hosting.

Ultimately, though, the highlight of the week was the 100th episode celebration of Castle. “The Lives of Others” was filled with great moments—from Andrew Marlowe and Terri Miller’s cameo to all of the sweet little moments between Castle and Beckett. However, the best moment of the episode—and the best moment on TV this week—was the revelation that the murder Castle was investigating was actually an elaborate birthday gift from Beckett. It featured the supporting characters we’ve come to love over the last 100 episodes interacting in perfect ways with each other and with the main characters. (I still get emotional thinking about Martha and Beckett’s relationship.) It showcased some fantastic acting from Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic as Castle went through a huge (yet believable) swing of emotions, starting with anger and ending with love. And it gave us another look at how deeply Beckett understands Castle and how much Castle enjoys still being surprised by the woman he loves.

The Best Thing I Saw on TV This Week (3/24 – 3/31)

This week in television was an emotional roller coaster, with highs and lows often coming within the same episode. Once Upon a Time may have had its share of frustrating moments in “Selfless, Brave and True” (I will never be over them turning August back into a child), but the quietly beautiful moment between Snow and Charming where she broke the news of her blackened heart to him reminded me of everything that is right with the show. If I were to pick a runner-up for the best thing I saw this week, that scene would undoubtedly be my choice. Castle had its share of great moments this past week as well, with Ryan’s backstory getting some much-deserved attention before the episode concluded with a sweet Castle/Beckett scene and an even sweeter scene between Ryan and Jenny. (Anybody else super excited to see Ryan as the adorable dad we all know he’ll be?)

Although there were plenty of strong moments to choose from, the best of the week came once again from New Girl. “Chicago” was as touching as it was hilarious, giving Nick’s character and the relationship between him and Jess some beautiful new layers. The entire funeral scene maintained the deft balancing act between humor and heart that’s made this show such a runaway success this season. Jess’s Elvis impression had me laughing, but Nick’s eulogy had me in tears from Jake Johnson’s honest depiction of grief. And the moments when Nick first sees what Jess is doing for him and his family and when Jess takes Nick’s hand will never fail to make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside (mainly because of Johnson’s face, which seems to be getting more and more attractive each week).

What was your favorite thing about this week in the world of TV?

The Best Thing I Saw on TV This Week (3/17 – 3/24)

This was a great week for me as a television viewer (even without a new Parks and Rec). One of my favorite reality shows, Dancing with the Stars, was back with some promising contenders for this season (I’m looking at you, Jacoby Jones). Castle gave us a fun take on the horror genre as well as some genuinely sweet moments between Castle and Beckett (“Be with Kate” was a close second for this week’s favorite TV moment). And Once Upon a Time continued its journey into the murkier waters of morality and featured one of the most powerfully acted scenes it’s ever had in a dramatic showdown between Snow White and Regina.

Although these were all great episodes, there was no real debate for what would be my pick for the best of this week in the world of television. For some time now, New Girl has been delivering must-see moments on a near-weekly basis. This week’s “Quick Hardening Caulk” ended with a kissing scene that was equal parts hilarious (“You’re so annoying with your little shorts!”) and HOT (because when Nick Miller kisses like a man, he really kisses like a man). New Girl has become the new standard for mixing comedy with sincere moments of emotion and character development, and this moment between Nick and Jess was showcased that balance perfectly.

And on a purely shallow note, it’s impossible to look at Jake Johnson in this scene and imagine that anything else on TV could possibly be better than his face (and ridiculously beautiful jawline).

What was the best thing you saw on TV this week?

The Best Thing I Saw on TV This Week (3/10 – 3/17)

While two of my favorite shows (Castle and New Girl) were still on depressingly long hiatuses this week, my week in television was still an emotional roller coaster. I watched Sean make his final choice (and I believe the right choice) on The Bachelor, and of course I got a little choked up watching the proposal. (Yes, I am a ridiculous romantic at heart. Judge away.) Once Upon a Time killed off a major character and added a dark new layer to my favorite character, in addition to making me cry multiple times. (Thanks a lot for that, Robert Carlyle.)

But the single greatest moment on TV this week came from Parks and Rec. Nothing I saw this week made me smile more than April, Ann, and Donna breaking into a pitch-perfect “Time After Time” sing-along. It was a big moment for April’s character and her relationship with Ann, but, more than anything, it was just a lot of fun. Parks and Rec can make me happy like nothing else on TV, and this was one of those moments where I was reminded of that in a truly creative way.

Sadly, there’s no video of this scene on YouTube anymore, but thank God once again for Tumblr. Enjoy!
