I’m Katie Kawa, your resident Nerdy Girl.
I’m a 2010 graduate of Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y., who majored in both English and Communication Studies (with a Journalism and Media Studies concentration). I’ve always been a passionate person, and I’m at my most passionate when talking about the books, movies, and television shows that I love. In 2012, I decided to put that passion (and my degree) to good use and start Nerdy Girl Notes as a place for other nerds like me to share our enthusiasm for the media and other things that inspire us.
In addition to running NGN, I work as an editorial director at an educational publishing company.
What else should you know about me? I enjoy talking about pop culture more than almost anything. I love sports, especially hockey, football, and college basketball. I have a running list of female characters I would defend as if they were real friends of mine. I cry over most things I read and watch for some reason or another. I wish I could make a living planning (and taking) vacations to Disney World. I would much rather find reasons to love something than find reasons to hate something. And I believe my entire personality can be summed up in the words of the great Leslie Knope: “If I seem too passionate, it’s because I care. If I come on strong, it’s because I feel strongly.”

Katie, I’m just now discovering your blog and I love it! I linked here through my Tumblr account, and I’ve spent much of this morning scrolling through and reading some of your older posts. And is it a coincidence that the anniversary of your blog is on my birthday, April 2nd? I think not! I love when my fandom loves collide with another’s (the whole Castle and Alias connection). I’ll be reading (and commenting) in the future, for sure! Take care.
Thank you for the lovely comment, Megan! And it’s most certainly not a coincidence that you and my blog share a birthday—you were meant to find it! 😉 Happy Belated Birthday!
Hey – just a quick note to say great blog! I enjoy reading it and I’ve nominated you for the Liebster Award: https://englishmaninberlin.wordpress.com/2014/11/30/liebster-award/
Thank you! 🙂
Hi Katie, I’m a big fan of your blog – and a fan of most the shows you watch (and you few you don’t), especially Once Upon a Time. I’m a writer myself (published author and freelancer) and I was wondering how you choose contributors for this site. Is there any way to join you guys? Please let me know!
Hi Laura! Most of my contributors are friends of mine from before NGN started, but I’m always looking for people to write for us! Feel free to email me at nerdygirlnotes@gmail.com with any ideas you have for what you’d like to write about (and maybe a writing sample if you have one). It would be great to have a new contributor here! 🙂
Hi Katie!
I just found your blog through Captain Swan Forever Facebook page and I must say, I’ve greatly enjoyed reading your analysis of OUAT. Do you have posts for every episode? I’ll look forward to your posts when season 6 starts.
Sorry, my name is Krystal
Thank you so much, Krystal! I’m so glad you found us here at NGN! I do have posts for every OUAT episode going as far back as the Season One finale. I also have a few essays and lists about the show, too, which I keep all under my “once upon a time” tag. I hope you enjoy what you find!
